A deadly accident occurred in Ndugu Kebbeh, in the North Bank Region of the Gambia, after a large Baobab tree fell on a ‘Gele Gele’ killing one handicapped woman on the spot, leaving many others injured.
The incident occurred on Saturday, A large Baobab tree fell on the vehicle during a strong windstorm. The vehicle commonly called ‘Gele Gele’ with the registration number BJL 1042D which was loading passengers to be transported to Farafenni, after attending the Ndugu Kebbeh Lumo market.
The deceased Fatou Kah, a mother of a 5-year-old boy was a handicap who was residing in Daru Ridwan in Central Baddibou, NBR. An eyewitness said the handicapped woman could not run when the tree fell on the vehicle. Some of the passengers escaped with minor injuries. They were later rushed to a nearby medical center for treatment.
People were unable to remove the tree on top of the vehicle. So, they called some people, who used a hacksaw machine to cut down the tree, It was raining at the time of the accident,” said an eyewitness quoted by Freedom newspaper.
Police were present immediately after the accident occurred. According to Daily Observer, the governor of NBR who doubles as the chairperson of the Regional Disaster Management Committee Ebrima KS Dampha visited the scene thus he underscored the need for people and transporters to be more vigilant to avoid standing or parking under big trees in order to mitigate disaster and loss of lives.
