Mr. Conte, a 55 year old firefighter, Sub Officer 2. Barika Conteh of the Gambia fire and rescue service is currently suffering from severe body burns which he sustained whiles on duty putting off fire he was accidentally trapped in a room and that has left him 85 incapacitated resulting to the amputation of his left hand above the elbow and was since then admitted at the serrekunda general hospital in kanifing.
The incident was said to have happened when he and his crew left their station ground to attend a fire seen at London corner on Saturday 31st December 2016 and unfortunately for him during the firefighting operation a wall in the building felt on him whiles performing his duty as he accidentally got trapped in a room. He also sustained severe burn injuries on the left side of his face involving the eyelids, the occipital region of the head, the sacral region, and multiple areas on his legs and his right arm.
The fire and rescue fighter condition has been unsatisfactory since on admission for he is unable to sit unsupported due to general cachexia and apparent socio-economic and some psychological detoriation. In a short interview with this reporter Conteh was unable to hold tears as he says all that the only thing he is looking up to is to humbly regain his health. According to the PRO of the GFRS Barika,s medical and other hospital expenses has been taking care of by the Gambia fire and rescue services until when he was discharged yesterday but according to a confirm medical report he needs urgent overseas treatment..
