One of Gambia’s major daily newspaper, Daily Observer has been ordered by the country’s Revenue Authority (GRA) yesterday to cease operation after it defaulted in tax accumulating to around D17 Million Dalasi.
Sources relate that an enforcement team of GRA entered the paper’s offices in Kanifing at around 15:00 while staff were working on the next day’s edition and ordered them to vacate the building. More than ninety staff working at the Observer are now redundant with no other alternative yet.
The Daily Observer has been created in 1992 by Kenneth Best, a Liberian as an independent newspaper but with the coming of former President Yahya Jammeh’s 1994 coup of Dawda Jawara, he ordered for Mr. Best’s arrest and subsequent deportation. The paper then became a pro-government, remaining Jammeh and APRC’s staunch propagandist.
