A 22-year-old man from the Gambia killed himself after his asylum claim was rejected, Italian newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Amadou Jawo was reported to have hanged himself from the cornice of his home at Castellaneta Marina near Taranto where he lived with other Gambians.
One pro-migrant association Babele has launched a subscription drive to pay for his body to be flown home. It said “his claim was denied and he could no longer stay in Italy”.
“He wanted to go back to Africa but he was afraid he would be marked out as a failure and he was ashamed. He thought he had no choice (but to commit suicide)”.
One of his comptratiots named Flex M L Jabbi has also posted on facebook an appeal for donations for his body to be returned back to his native village in the Gambia.
