Gambia’s Ties to China Set to Grow

Gambia’s ties with China  are set to grow, China is ready to enhance cooperation with our country in infrastructure, agriculture, tourism and other fields, said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi here on Tuesday.

Minister Darboe is on a China visit from July 31 to Aug 6. It is his first official visit here after Gambian President Adama Barrow took office in January. He also met State Councilor Yang Jiechi, China’s top diplomat, later on Aug 1.

Minister Wang said the resumption of diplomatic ties between the two countries has not only brought bilateral relations back to the right track, but also opened up broad prospects for cooperation.
China appreciates the new Gambian government’s firm adherence to the one-China principle and its commitment to friendship with China, Wang told visiting Gambian Foreign Minister Ousainou Darboe during a meeting.

China is willing to work with the Gambian side to enhance mutual trust, expand people-to-people exchanges as well as strengthen coordination in global and regional affairs to push bilateral relations to a higher level, said Wang.

The Gambian government and people highly appreciates the ideas and initiatives proposed by Chinese leader on China-Africa cooperation, highly appreciates the support and assistance China has provided to the country, according to Minister Darboe.

Gambia will stick to the one-China policy, and is looking forward to pragmatic cooperation with China in various fields, he added. The two ministers signed an agreement on a consultation mechanism between the two ministries following their talks. 

China has also cancelled Gambia’s debt, granted zero-interest loans and other concessional financings, Gambia’s Foreign Minister, Ousainou Darboe signed the agreement with China’s Deputy Commerce Minister, Qian Keming.
