Gambia’s President Adama Barrow will keep his name, he will not be adding the traditional title of “Alhaji” after completing the Hajj ritual.
“His Excellency the President does not intend to adopt the title of Alhaji following the completion of the Hajj rites. Therefore, he should continue to be addressed as His Excellency Adama Barrow as inscribed on the official portrait,” Press Secretary Amie Bojang-Sisohore said.
The use of the title has been a subject of debate on social media since dictator Jammeh made it a part of his name and was adressed as such.
The decision of the new leader came as no surprise after Barrow returned to The Gambia on Wednesday after a two-week religious trip to Saudi Arabia.
